You can't miss it if you do a fresh log into gmail yesterday or today or future. It's a new feature called Buzz that resembles the Facebook Wall.

And since I can hide the link in settings, I don't even have to wait for Google Redesigned (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8434) (my gmail theme) to be updated to account for the link icon change. :)
